From the day your partner proposed, you’ve probably been wearing your engagement ring. However, as your wedding draws closer, you might be wondering what to do with the engagement ring during the ceremony.

Are you supposed to wear your engagement ring on your wedding day? Or do you take it off and replace it with your wedding ring? If you’re unsure, our diamond experts are here to reveal everything you need to know.

Instead of removing any rings, women usually wear their engagement ring and the wedding ring on the same finger. Both rings are usually worn on the third finger of the left hand - traditionally seen as your ring finger in many countries. When you get married, the wedding ring is worn first, being closest to the heart, whilst the engagement ring sits above.

How should I wear my engagement ring?
While leaving your engagement ring in a safe place is sensible while you’re getting married, you’re probably more likely to want to show it off. There are four easy options to ensure you’re wearing your engagement ring down the aisle.

Wear it on your right hand: While tradition suggests the ring should be worn on the left, placing it on your other hand won’t be a big problem. This means all eyes will be on your wedding ring and after the ceremony, you can pop your engagement ring back onto the wedding finger.

Leave it be: While the wedding ring should be placed before the engagement ring, this doesn’t have to happen right away. The new ring can be simply placed on top of the engagement ring, and you can change them around later.

Have it soldered to your wedding ring: If you want your engagement ring to be worn on the big day, you could have it soldered to your wedding ring, meaning you can wear both on your finger during your ceremony.

Wear it as a pendant: If you want to wear a necklace on your wedding day, you could always wear your engagement ring on a chain around your neck. That way it’s still visible but doesn’t take the attention away from your wedding ring.

In which order should I wear my rings?
You should wear your wedding band first, followed by the engagement ring which sits above. To help the rings sit perfectly together, many couples choose to buy Wedfit engagement rings. Whilst in today’s world, historical traditions are starting to decline, this particular tradition comes from the ancient Greeks and Romans who believed that the vein in the ring finger was connected straight to your heart, meaning if you wore your wedding ring on that finger, it would run directly to your heart. Although scientists have proved that the ‘Vein of Love’ unfortunately isn’t real, the romantic sentiment behind the concept has kept the tradition alive for hundreds of years.
